Our mission is to honor the legacy of Idlewild as a cherished African American resort community while fostering its growth and prosperity for future generations.

Known as a Safe Haven for African Americans nationwide.

Idlewild was founded in the early 20th century as an African American resort community. It was established in 1912 when two white land developers, Lewis Eastwood and William Lewis, decided to create a vacation destination for African Americans in Michigan.
Idlewild was known for its vibrant entertainment scene. Home to numerous nightclubs, theaters, and performance venues that featured renowned African American entertainers and musicians. The Paradise Club and Flamingo Club were among the famous venues in Idlewild.

"Idlewild had its own mystique, its own magnetic charm. It was one of those places where black people could enjoy life."

— Della Reese

We pledge to honor the rich cultural heritage of Idlewild by preserving its historic landmarks, sharing its stories, and celebrating the contributions of African Americans who once thrived in this vibrant community.
